Applications in the maritime and nautical sector

The maritime and nautical sector has experienced significant advances in technology and equipment management, with especially relevant applications in tidal control and aquaculture.
In this blog we will explain two outstanding applications such as the handling of cages in fish farms and the operation of tidal valves, where the help of our lifting systems are revolutionizing these operations, improving efficiency and safety in the sector.

Cage Management in Norwegian Fish Farms.

Norway, a global leader in aquaculture, requires robust solutions to handle its growing demands in the salmon industry, which accounts for more than 65% of global production.
In this context, the management of large fish cages is essential to maintain efficiency and safety in fish farms.

Winches play a crucial role in these operations.
Designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the marine environment, cages can be easily removed from the water, simplifying maintenance and other activities.
Constructed of 316 stainless steel, this equipment offers superior corrosion resistance, which is crucial in environments where salinity is high.

In addition, these winches can be operated manually or by electric motors, providing flexibility depending on the specific needs of the fish farm.
The ability to quickly switch between manual crank operation and motorized operation allows for greater operational efficiency, which is critical in the aquaculture industry.

The winches are equipped with an adjustable crank that features an ergonomic handle, plus a worm gear that has maintenance-free bearings.
They are available in different capacities: 500, 1500, 3000 and 5000 kg.
In addition, they have cable outlets both at the top and at the bottom and back, which makes them quite safe and resistant.
Some common applications include lifting and moving salty aquatic environments, marine environments, deep water, fish hatcheries, on boats, and for use on docks and jetties.

Tidal valve innovation on the River Thames

Tidal management on rivers such as the Thames is another area where winch technology has proven to be of great help.
At the Horseshoe Corner location, Gebuwin-branded marine winches have been instrumental in the operation of tidal valves that prevent upstream flow during tidal and flood conditions, opening the valves when necessary.

Two Gebuwin marine winches are used to perform this task, made entirely of 316 stainless steel and can lift loads up to 5,000 kg.
In order to ensure smooth winding of the wire rope into the drum, grooves are machined into the drum and a pressure roller is installed to maintain tension on the wire rope and guide it into the grooves.
To properly guide the cable to the valves, stainless steel pulley blocks are used.

Thanks to these innovations, the River Thames’ tidal valves are operated more accurately and safely, ensuring effective control of water flow during high tides and flooding situations.
These types of technological solutions not only improve operational efficiency, but also contribute to the protection of critical infrastructures and the mitigation of environmental risks, consolidating their value in modern water resource management.
